Recycled HDPE prices increase slightly for the end of the year | Plastics News

Oct 24, 2024

Prices for recycled high density polyethylene resin pellets have continued to rise slightly in the last quarter of the year.

Natural post-consumer pellet prices increased by 2 cents, mixed-colored post-industrial pellets are up 1 cent and mixed-colored post-consumer pellets increased 2 cents, according to market sources in discussion with Plastics News.

These pricing changes are being shown on this week's PN resin pricing chart.

Sources suspect an increase in demand due to companies having post-consumer material usage goals to meet in 2025.

"It's probably the brands are buying because they need to meet commitments," a consultant from the Northeast said.

"Natural is a pretty small market in terms of the products that use natural HDPE, it's such a versatile resin because it's not dyed, so it's easy for the brands to buy it and dye it any color they want," the consultant added

Growing demand might prompt another 1-2 cent increase by the end of the year. But expectations are that recycled HDPE prices will increase around the second quarter of the year, when the construction market starts to pick back up.

"There's an interesting correlation between color HDPE prices and housing starts," the consultant said. "There's a very good chance that."
